American Legion Post 322 in Saline, Michigan—officially known as the William B. Lutz Post—was established in the years following World War I and named in honor of William Brian Lutz, a 1913 salutatorian of Saline High School and a local veteran of the Great War. In 1948, the post received a significant gift from Miss Vesta Mills: the historic Mills House at 300 W. Michigan Avenue, which she bequeathed with the stipulation that it be preserved as a memorial and never serve alcohol. This gift established a lasting home for the post and solidified its role as both a memorial and a community cornerstone. Over the decades, Post 322 has remained deeply involved in veteran support and civic life in Saline, organizing free Veterans Day lunches, D-Day ceremonies with bugle calls and 21-gun salutes, German-themed fundraising dinners, and countless other events. The post regularly collaborates with groups like the Sons of the American Legion, the Rotary Club, and local sponsors to provide scholarships, meals for seniors, youth programs, and support for military families. Today, it continues to honor veterans while fostering a strong connection with the community it serves, upholding the American Legion’s mission through both remembrance and active outreach.
